The council reports that Americans eat an average of 60 hot dogs every year. The hot dog received its name from New York sports cartoonist Tad Dorgan. In 1901, at a baseball game at the Polo Grounds in New York, vendors began selling hot dachshund sausages in rolls (this was the name of the dogs back in the day!)
